Abstract:

Introduction: Self-harm in adolescents is defined as intentional self-injury or self-poisoning irrespective of motivation or intent. The present study aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of Dialectic Behavioral Therapy- Family and child Skills Training (DBT-FST) on impulsivity and quality of life in 15- to 17-year-old females with self-harm behaviors of Ahvaz city. Methods: This research had a quasi- experimental design. In this study, 30 children were selected by using the random multistage sampling method and were assigned to 2 experimental and control groups (n=15). The experimental group received 16 intervention sessions for children (one session per week for 1 hour) and 8 sessions of intervention for mothers (one session per 2 week for 2 hours), and the control group was waiting to receive the intervention. The participants of both groups responded to Barratt Impulsivity Questionnaire (2002) and Quality of Life Index Cummins (2002).Results: The findings of multivariate covariance showed that Dialectic Behavioral Therapy - Family and Child Skills Training (DBT-FST) significantly reduced symptoms of impulsivity (P<0.001, F=21.83) and improved quality of life (P£0.001, F=46.58) in children of the experimental group compared to the control group; these results were maintained for 2 months after the intervention. Conclusions: Based on the findings, it could be suggested that Dialectic Behavioral Therapy- Family and Child Skills Training was effective in reducing impulsivity and improved quality of life in females with self- harm behaviors, so it is recommended to use this approach for students with self- harm behaviors.

Introduction: About half of multiple sclerosis patients experience sleep disorder. Sleep disturbance is associated with death and symptoms of pain, fatigue, and depression in these patients. The present study was conducted to determine the effect of Valerian plant on the quality of sleep in patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods: The present study was a double-blind randomized clinical trial, which was conducted on patients with multiple sclerosis in the winter of 2017 and referring to the Rehabilitation Hospital of Tehran city in 2 groups; 23 patients received the intervention and served as controls. The data gathering tool included a demographic questionnaire and Pittsburgh sleep quality index. In the intervention group, Valerian's half- crushed plant was given in a bag to take for 21 nights (30 to 90 minutes before bedtime). In the control group, the placebo was made up of flour and red sugar and was delivered in the same shape and package. Sleep quality score was recorded before and after Valerian consumption. Data analysis was performed using the paired t-test and independent t-test with the SPSS 18 software. Results: The 2 groups were matched in terms of all demographic variables (except gender). The results of covariance analysis showed that the Valerian plant was significant on all aspects of sleep quality (except sleep quality and taking sleep medications) (P=0.0001) and was able to improve overall sleep quality by 24.6% and improve the quality of sleep dimensions at 9.3% and 13.9%.The changes in the intervention group was significant (P=0.017) yet was not significant in the control group (P=0.757). There was no significant difference in sleep quality score of all intervention and control group members in the pre-test (P=0.16), yet there was a significant difference in the posttest (P=0.001).Conclusions: According to the results of this study, Valerian plant was able to effect sleep quality in 5 of 7 aspects, therefore, it can be thought of as a complementary therapy in patients with sleep disorders.

Abstract:

Introduction: The infants mortality rate is one of the important health indices in the communities. The current study aimed at determining the frequency and causes of infants mortality in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Fatemieh Hospital of Hamadan, Iran in 2015.Methods: The present retrospective, cross sectional study was conducted on all the infants admitted to NICU at Fatemieh Hospital of Hamadan in 2015 and died. Referring to the archives of the hospital, the required information about the infants died during the stay at NICU were extracted and analyzed with SPSS version 19.Results: In the current study, a total of 1080 newborns admitted to NICU were investigated, of which 200 cases including 96 males (48%) and 104 females (52%) died. The most frequent infants mortality was observed in the cases aged 28-32 weeks of gestation (63%; n=126); of the 200 studied cases, 74.5% (n=149) were delivered via cesarean section, 3.5% (n=7) had anomalies, and 4% (n=8) reported the maternal risk factors. The most common causes of death were the respiratory distress syndrome (74.9%; n=149), followed by multiple pregnancies (n=44) of which 27 cases (61.4%) were twins and 17 cases (38.6%) were the triples. Conclusions: Considering the high prevalence of premature death in infants less than 37 weeks of gestation, more attentions should be paid on the control of preterm delivery in order to prevent respiratory distress syndrome and birth asphyxia.

Abstract:

Introduction: Disability causes physical, psychological, and social disorders in the suffering people. Some studies suggested that exercise can reduce such disorders. Therefore, the current study aimed at investigating the effect of sport activities on the quality of life, mental health, and depression in the people with disability. Methods: The statistical population of the current quasi-experimental study was all the patients with physical and mental disorders in Shiraz, Iran. Because of limited access to the target population, using the purposive sampling method, 69 subjects (18 patients with disabilities and 51 healthy subjects) referring to the Welfare Organization of Shiraz, Iran were enrolled in the study. Data collection tools were the 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36), general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) and the Beck depression inventory. For data analysis, SPSS version 18 with Mann-Whitney U test was used (a=0.05).Results: The findings of the current study showed that the active disabled people got higher total scores in mental health (P=0.001) as well as subscales of physical symptoms (P=0.001), anxiety (P=0.001), depression (P=0.001), quality of life (P=0.001), role play limitations due to mental (emotional) reasons (P=0.03), social functioning (P=0.001), and role play limitations due to physical (P=0.01) and general health (P=0.03) reasons than the inactive ones. Conclusions: The findings of the current study showed that exercise can improve the quality of life, mental health, and depression in people with disabilities. Therefore, it is suggested to include exercises in the weekly rehabilitation schedule of this vulnerable group of the community.

Abstract:

Introduction: Hypertension is one of the major causes of disability. Illness perception is an important predictor for adherence to therapeutic regimens. The current study aimed at determining the relationship between adherence to a regimen and illness perception among elderly with hypertension. Methods: The current descriptive, analytical, cross sectional study was performed on 325 elderly people with hypertension referring to the elderly health centers of Tehran, Iran, selected via the random cluster sampling method in 2016. The data gathering instrument was the demographic questionnaire, Morisky medication adherence scale (MMAS), and illness perception questionnaire- revised (BIPQ-r). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression coefficient with SPSS version18.Results: Pearson correlation coefficient showed that there was a significant direct correlation between perceived disease and adherence to treatment in the elderly with hypertension (P<0.001, r=0.181). Therefore, the older people with hypertension got higher scores in the perception test, and reported more adherence to medical regimens. Conclusions: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between adherence to a regimen and illness perception. Therefore, strengthening the perception of the disease in order to increase adherence regimens in patient is considered as an important strategy in educational interventions.

Introduction: Hypertension is the leading cause of premature death worldwide, which may develops to heart attacks, stroke, and heart failure. Restless legs syndrome is one of the factors may be associated with hypertension. The current study aimed at determining the association between hypertension and restless legs syndrome in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods: The current cross sectional study was conducted on 290 patients with cardiovascular diseases admitted to Shahid Rajaei and Shariati hospitals in 2016 enrolled based on the convenience sampling method. The restless leg syndrome screening questionnaire was used as a data collection tool. Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, t test, and Chi-square test with SPSS version 18. P< 0.05 was considered as the level of significance. Results: Based on the results of the current study, 34.8% of patients had high blood pressure and 27.9% had restless legs syndrome. There was a significant relationship between hypertension and restless legs syndrome; the risk of hypertension in patients with restless legs syndrome was 3.5 times higher than the ones without restless legs syndrome [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.1-6.2, odds ratio (OR) =3.6, P=0.0001].Conclusions: There is a relationship between hypertension and restless legs syndrome in patients with cardiovascular diseases. It seems that evaluating restless legs syndrome as a risk factor for hypertension in patients with cardiovascular diseases is necessary.

Abstract:

Introduction: A preterm neonate puts the mother in complicated conditions, and affects the natural process of neonatal care as well as parental role, particularly the mother’s role. Self- efficacy is a factor that significantly influences the proper function and responsibility of mother, and also is a determining factor in the evolution of mother’s performance and has a close relationship with the growth and development of infant. On the other hand, quality of life (QoL) is related with self- efficacy. The current study aimed at determining the relationship between self- efficacy and QoL in mothers with preterm neonates in Kamali Hospital, Karaj, Iran, in 2015.Methods: The current cross sectional, descriptive- analytical study was conducted using the convenience sampling method on 115 mothers with preterm neonates. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, perceived maternal parenting self- efficacy (PMP S-E), and the Persian version of quality of life questionnaire. Then, the relationship of QoL with self-efficacy and some relevant factors was assessed. Results: In the current study, by increasing the self- efficacy, the QoL also increased. In other words, by one point increase in self- efficacy, the QoL increased 0.5 point. Level of income and maternal education were considered as the factors significantly influencing the increase of self- efficacy and QoL. In this regard, it seems that the employment of the mother and unwanted pregnancy were the indices that affected the reduction of self- efficacy and QoL scores. Conclusions: According to the positive and direct relationship between self-efficacy and QoL that plays a significant role in different aspects of individuals’ social life, targeted therapeutic programs to promote self- efficacy and QoL in mothers with preterm infants should be planed.
