Title

TECHNICAL, ECONOMICAL AND HEALTHY EVALUATION OF PACI (POLY ALUMINUM CHLORIDE) APPLICATION IN WATER TREATMENT

POLY ALUMINUM CHLORIDE (PACI)

Abstract

In WATER TREATMENT plants COAGULATION and flocculation is used for removing colloidal particles from surface waters, ALUMINUM SULPHATE and ferric chloride are the most common coagulants applied in this process. Since it is probable that heavy metals would be present in water treated with ferric chloride, in many European countries the use of this coagulant is limited to wasteWATER TREATMENT, and for WATER TREATMENT, coagulant with aluminum base (alum& PAC1) are being used. Because of technical, economical and hygienic advantages of PAC1, it is proposed as a new coagulant. In this research, to compare these coagulants, synthetic turbidities (60, 200, 350, 500 and 800 NTIJ) were prepared and optimum dose of the coagulant was determined using Jar test. PH, alkalinity, sludge volume and residual aluminum in treated water were measured.. The study results indicated that from the economic view point, application of PACl can reduce 30- 40% of coagulant cost. Therefore, 1000 million Rials (125000$) can be saved annually in Iran. On the other hand, the results indicated that residual aluminum in treated water with PACl is lower than maximum permissible level of 0.2 ppm (WHO).On the basis of the research, application of PACl as a new coagulant can be proposed with regard to the above advantages
