Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the LEADERSHIP STYLES of COACHES (according to a multi - dimensional model) and cohesion of BASKETBALL teams present in Iranian premiership league. 144 BASKETBALL PLAYERS, responded to the questionnaires including leadership scale in sport (LSS) (Chelladurai and Saleh 1980) and group environment questionnaire (GEQ) (Caron, Widmeyer, and Brawly 1985).The two latter questionnaires were used to study PLAYERS, perception of LEADERSHIP STYLES of COACHES and cohesion in their own teams. Results showed: 1. a significant direct relationship among LEADERSHIP STYLES (instruction behavior, democratic behavior, social support, and positive feedback) as well as a significant reverse relationship of autocratic leadership with social and task cohesion among PLAYERS (p<0.01). 2. A significant difference between leadership style of COACHES in successful teams and those in unsuccessful ones (p<0.01). 3. A significant direct relationship between TEAM COHESION and the success (i.e. win percentage of a team for the season) (p<0.01). Based on the results, it can be said that leadership style of COACHES is one of the factors related to cohesion while cohesion itself leads to success for a team. In addition, those COACHES using instruction behavior, democratic behavior, social support and positive feedback styles rather than autocratic behavior, have more cohesive and finally more successful teams.
