Abstract

NORPLANT implant system is a long term hormonal and reversible method of CONTRACEPTION which consisting of six flexible capsules are placed subdermally in the inner layer of the non dominant arm and provides protection for pregnancy up to five .1993years. In a historical cohort study, 2103 NORPLANT acceptors in the research center of family planning of Gilan from Dec Rank test, and the effects of to Dec 1999 were studied and the results were analyzed by Kaplan Meier method and Log variables with using COX REGRESSION model were analyzed. The CONTINUATION rate of NORPLANT at first year and the end of fifth year were 97% and 63% respectively. The REMOVAL rate before 5 years was 27.2% and menstrual disturbances was the most common cause of the REMOVAL (62.18%). The mean duration of using was 39.75 months. There wasn’t any NORPLANT failure during the study. There wasn’t any statistical relation between age, parity, education and occupation with CONTINUATION rate of NORPLANT. There was a significant statistical relation between previous CONTRACEPTION method and CONTINUATION rate. DMPA users had the most and IUD users had the lowest CONTINUATION rate. The CONTINUATION rate in cases, who had irregular menses before NORPLANT insertion, was lower than who had regular menses (P<0.007).
