Abstract

The first effective treatment for tuberculosis (TB) was developed with the discovery of streptomycin (STM) by Waksman in 1943, however, immediately after its introduction many patients started showing resistance to this antibiotic. Basically, a single anti-TB drug should never be used in the treatment of active TB, and regimens that using more than one drug are recommended. In late 1960s, rifampicin (RMP) was introduced and with the use of combination therapy, there was a decline in drug-resistant and drug-susceptible TB.
