Abstract

Background: Nerve tissue injuries may occur during various dental and routine surgical procedures that result in partial or total loss of motor or sensory function in the involved segments. Depending on the type and severity of the injury the treatment approaches may vary. Despite the progress in understanding the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve injury and regeneration, as well as advancements in microsurgical techniques, peripheral nerve injuries are still a major challenge for reconstructive surgeons. The aim of this review study is to investigate the efficacy of low-level laser therapy (photobiomodulation) as one of the treatment approaches in nerve regeneration. Methods: An electronic search was performed on relevant English articles up to January 2017 in the PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. Results: The literature pointed out three main goals of photobiomodulation in nerve injuries: acceleration of injured nerve tissue regeneration, stimulation of adjacent or contralateral nerve tissues, causing them to play the role of the sectioned nerve and biomodulation of the nerve response leading to the normality of the action potential threshold. Conclusion: Based on the encouraging results of this review, photobiomodulation can be a novel approach in nerve regeneration considering the correct selection of nerve injuries cases and appropriate laser parameters.
