Abstract

Objectives: DORSALGIA is one of the most common diseases in different region of the world. Different factors like sex, age, trunk weight, job and daily activity affect its prevalence. Changes in back spine curvature and forces of its supporting muscles may cause stress on thoracic vertebral column. We studied the relationship between DORSALGIA and thoracic spine curvature and its muscle force.Materials and methods: We enrolled 1560 patients from 3 physiotherapy center of Tehran in this analytic cross-sectional study. The patients divided to two groups of patients with complaints of back and SHOULDER PAIN and a group of patients (age and height and weight match) with complaint of pain in other part of the body. We used flexible ruler, slope meter, plumb-line to measure the needed values and also examined symmetry of shoulders, back and shoulder muscle force. A 10 question questionnaire was used to measure amount of daily physical activity. Level of significance considered 0.05.Results: Out of 1560 patients, 68.8% (1073) were female and 31.2% (487) were male. No significant difference in age, height and weight of patients in 2 mentioned group was detected (p>0.05). Prevalence of increase in back curvature was 86.9% vs 8.9%, scoliosis 21.2% vs 3.4%, lowpositoned shoulders 34.3% vs 9.6% and lateral deviation of shoulders 23.7% vs 5.12% in first and second group respectively (p<0.05). Regular exercise, paravertebral and shoulder muscle force were also significantly different in two groups (p<0.05).Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between DORSALGIA with thoracic spine curvature and its muscle force. General education and self care especially for young peoples and females are necessary to prevent these conditions.
