Abstract

Aims. This study was to evaluate the effect of L-CARNITINE on SEMEN PARAMETERS of MATURE MALE RATs exposed to CADMIUM.Materials & Methods. This research carried out on 30 MATURE MALE RATs; weighting about 180-240 grams. Rats divided into five groups. The control group (first) received nothing and kept as others. The second group received 0.3 ml of distilled water, the third group 500 milligram per kilogram of body weight of L-CARNITINE, the forth group 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight of CADMIUM and the fifth group 500 milligram per kilogram of body weight of L-CARNITINE and 1 milligram per kilogram of body weight CADMIUM by injection one another day intraperitoneally for 16 days. Rats sacrificed on day 17th after the first treatment and weights of right testis recorded. To evaluate the sperm count, motility and viability, the right caudal epididymis removed and immediately immersed into 10 ml of HBSS solution.Results. Following contamination with CADMIUM, rats showed decrease in the number, motility and viability of sperm. In addition, L-CARNITINE caused increase in the number, motility and viability of sperm in CADMIUM-induced group. Conclusion. Results demonstrate beneficial effects of L-CARNITINE treatment in CADMIUM toxicity on semen parameters.
