Aims. In the present study, the antinocieceptive activity of saffron (Crocus sativus) water-extract in female N-MARI mice (20-25 g) investigated.Materials & Methods. Formalin test applied for pain assesment. 30 minutes before 2% formalin solution (2 ml) injection in posterior plantar angle, the drugs administered to the animals. Then the animals evaluated for pain assesment for 60 min in a 5 min interwalls manner.Results. Morphine (1, 5 and 10 mg/kg) administeration induced antinocieception in both acute and chronic phases of formalin test in a dose-dependent manner. Extract (10, 50 and 100 mg/kg) also induced analgesia in chronic but not acute phase of formalin test. Naloxone (4 mg/kg) administration had no effect on the antinocieceptive activity of the extract. Dextromethorphane (20 mg/kg), on the other hand, enhances the extract action in acute phase as well as chronic phase. In addition, L-NAME (10 mg/kg) administration potentiates the extract effect. Co-administration of ineffective dose of indomethacine (2.5 mg/kg) with the extract (2.5 mg/kg) had no influence on the extract antinocieception effect. Conclusion. Water extract of C. sativus exerts its effect on the chronic phase of formalin test, possiblly via inhibition of NMDA glutamatergic as well as nitric oxide syste.

Abstract:

Aims. In this study, the oxidative stress of diazinone and the vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) protective effect against diazinone in astrocytes type U373MG evaluated.Material & Methods. Cells exposed to different doses of diazinone at different time intervals. Then, the effect of 300 mM of diazinone for 72 hours as optimum dose alone or in the presence of vitamin B6, either 30 min before or post diazinone treatment evaluated on GSH level and cells viability.Results. Diazinone, at the dose of 300 mM, significantly reduced the GSH level at 72 hours post exposure. Pre-treatment with vitamin B6 could increase the GSH level approximately near the control value. Diazinone could decrease (about 20%) the cells viability, significantly. Either pre- or post-treatment with vitamin B6, could prevent cell death induced by diazinone.Conclusion. Diazinone probably is toxic for U373MG via oxidative stress induction and decrease of GSH level. Either pre- or post-treatment by vitamin B6 can protect cells and prevents GSH level reduction and cell death.

Aims. Lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow is one of the common problems of orthopedic clinics. The aim of this study was to compare the treatment effects of autologous blood injection and local corticosteroid injection in lateral epicondylitis patients. Materials & Methods. In this clinical trial, 60 patients suffering from lateral epicondylitis admitted to Hospital 501 in 2007-2008, randomly assigned to two 30 patients groups. The treatment protocol for group I was single local injection of methyl prednisolone and 2% lidocaine. For group II, local injection of autologous blood (which obtained from distal site of the same hand) in conjunction with lidocaine 2% performed. Quick DASH questionnaire completed and other factors needed for analyzing and comparing two methods recorded at the admission time, 4th and 8th weeks following treatment session.  Results. At 4th week after treatment, “upper limb pain during last 24 hours”, “maximum pain during gripping of affected hand”, “pain threshold in examination site” and Quick DASH score of autologous blood injection were better than prednisolone group (p<0.05). Autologous blood patients had significantly better condition than group II patients in all assessments parameter at 8th week (p<0.05).Conclusion. Findings of present study show better treatment effects of local autologous blood injection than local prednisolone injection in treatment of tennis elbow patients.

Aims. Physical activity and physical fitness have consistently been linked to lower CVD rates in women. In this study, effect of short-term aerobic training on the fibrinolytic factors and anthropometric parameters in postmenopausal women evaluated.Materials & Methods. 20 healthy postmenopausal women (48-55 years old), randomly divided into two groups. Training group undergone 10 sessions of sub maximal aerobic cycling, 35 minutes for a 3 weeks period. Control group members had no exercise in this period. Anthropometric and physical fitness parameters and changes in specific fibrinolytic factors assessed both before and after aerobic program in two groups.Results. There was no statistically differences in weight and BMI between two groups but lean body mass increased (p=0.01) and fat percent decreased in training group (p=0.05). Rest heart rate (p=0.0001), systolic blood pressure (p=0.004) and diastolic blood pressure (p=0.006) also decreased after training. PAI activity (p=0.004) and PAI value (p=0.0001) showed significant reduction after 10 sessions of training. In training group, tPA value (p=0.02) and tPA activity (p=0.002) increased.Conclusion. Regular submaximal training program improve fibrinolytic activity on postmenopausal women, suggests that short aerobic training has a beneficial effect on cardiovascular diseases.

Aims. This clinical trial study was to compare postoperative surgical site infections in interrupted versus continuous subcuticular skin closure in clean-contaminated wounds. Materials & Methods. This is a randomized clinical trial study performed during 2007 to 2008 on 200 patients referred to one of Tehran hospitals (100 patients in each group). Surgical sites' infections (SSIs) evaluated following two periods; first week and first month. Quantitative and qualitative variables analyzed by t-test and chi square, respectively. Data analyzed used SPSS 11.5 software. Results. The average age of the paitents were 36.4±17.7 years (minimum of 18 and maximum of 64). 73 patients were females and 127 patients were males. Eight patients with SSIs found among all (4%). The rate of SSIs was 3 cases in continuous subcuticular group and 5 cases in interrupted group in clean-contaminated wound. No significant difference between 2 groups found (p=0.4). Conclusion. The method of continuous subcuticular suture does not increase the risk of SSIs. Considering cosmetic effects and less post operative pain, decrease of duration of surgery and less hospital cost, the continuous subcuticular suture is recommended in clean-contaminated wounds.

Aims. This study designed to compare the effectiveness of vitamin E and Ibuprofen on reducing the amount, duration and interval of menstrual period bleeding in primary dysmenorrheal.Materials & Methods. This is an experimental cross-over study performed on 75 female students between 18 and 22 years old suffering from primary dysmenorrheal. After taking written consent they divided in two groups of 40 and 35. First group received 500 units of vitamin E (2 tablets of 400 and 100 units) and second group 1200 mg of Ibuprofen (400mg TDS) per day. Treatment with vitamin E started two days before the beginning of menstruation and continued until the first day of bleeding (3 days in total) and Ibuprofen administered only during the first 24 hours of mence (only one day).Results. With a similar effect, both vitamin E and Ibuprofen could reduce the severity of the blood loss (p<0.05).Conclusion. It appears that Ibuprofen can be replaced by vitamin E in reducing of bleeding amount in primary dysmenorrheal. Vitamin E does not cause any digestive disorder or fatigue.
