COMPARISON OF MINIMAL EXCISION AND DEEP LAYER PRIMARY CLOSURE METHODS IN PILONIDAL SINUS SURGERY

Pages

  53-56

Abstract

Aims. Pilonidal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition usually occurring in the sacrococcygeal region. The aim of this study was to compare the results of MINIMAL EXCISION with DEEP LAYER PRIMARY CLOSURE procedure in pilonidal sinus.Materials & Methods. A total of 160 male patients (mean age of 22.64 years) divided in two groups. 80 patients undergone MINIMAL EXCISION (open) and 80 patients undergone DEEP LAYER PRIMARY CLOSURE (close).Results. Duration of surgery was 4.53 in open group and 16.01 in close group (p=0.0001). Average hospital stay for two groups was 1.16 days. Average time of return to work was 14.51 days in open group and 18/38 days in close group (p=0.05). Average time of wound healing was 26.94 days in open group and 13.63 days in close group (p=0.0001). Average tensity of pain was 4.21 in open group and 4.51 in closed group (p=0.3). Recurrence rate occurred in 7.5% of patients in two groups (p=0.41).Conclusion. There is no significant difference between two groups in pain, recurrence rate, hospital stay and return to work. But, there are significant differences in duration of surgery, postoperative discharge, bleeding and healing time between two groups. DEEP LAYER PRIMARY CLOSURE is superior procedure for surgical treatment of PILONIDAL DISEASES.
