Abstract

GLUTATHIONE-S-TRANSFERASEs (GSTs) have been shown to be involved in the cellular detoxification of endogen and exogenous compounds. The human placental form (GSTπ) has recently been suggested to be a marker of carcinogenesis. In the present study we have investigated the sera content of GST-π as a diagnostic factor in patients with malignancies. The first enzyme immunoassay for GST -π determination was developed. The range of dose dependent curve was 0.4-20 ng/ml without cross reactivity with other isoenzymes. By using developed ELISA method, sera level of GST-π in 42 normal subjects and gastric and esophageal patients were (10.3±2.9, 23.7±5.4 and 22.8±3.5 ng/ml respectively (P<0.001). Over 80% of patients with stage IV gastric cancer and 75% of esophageal patients with stage IV and even about 60% of those with stage II,III and about 60% of gastric patients with stage II had elevated serum GST-π.
