Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is one of useful way to detect CEREBRAL venus THROMBOSIS. We evaluated 39 (30 females and 9 males) patients with CEREBRAL venous THROMBOSIS (mean age of 32 years) who admitted in 3 university hospitals in Tehran. In 32 (82%) cases, the CSF pressure was high (mean=320 mmH20) and in 7 patients (18%), the pressure was normal (mean=130 mmH20). CSF analysis for protein, sugar and cell count was normal in 23 cases (59%) and low protein (less than 15mg/dl) was the single abnormally in 5(13%) cases. In 10 cases (25%), CSF analysis showed one or several abnormalities including; high protein(3 cases), high WBC count with lymphocyte predominant (7 cases) and increased RBC count (5 cases). No cases showed decreased sugar in CSF. Therefore, CSF analysis and its pressure recording are useful measures for evaluation of CEREBRAL venous THROMBOSIS. An increased CSF pressure was noted, however, its normalities never rule out sinus venous THROMBOSIS.
