Abstract

Because of an increase in THE ELDERLY population, attention towards THE ELDERLY has become S priority. To investigate the effects of SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPs and SELF-CONFIDENCE on the MENTAL HEALTH of THE ELDERLY, 100 males aged 65 or over were randomly selected cluster sampling. All of the males were from the central area of the city of Kerman. The group was evaluated on the measure of their SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPs and SELF-CONFIDENCE. Five men were excluded from the study because of non-cooperation, and 7 were excluded for illiteracy. The GHQ 12 questionnaire was administered to the remaining participants. An analysis of the data using two-way ANOVA indicated that the obtained F value is not significant for any of the main factors of SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPs, but the F value for the interaction of the two variables of the study was significant (P<0.01). Thus, the simultaneous effect of SOCIAL RELATIONSHIPs and self -confidence on the improvement of MENTAL HEALTH in THE ELDERLY is confirmed.
