Abstract

Introduction: Today's nursing education generally has focused on the teaching methods which reinforce problem, solving and critical thinking skills. -Regarding the nature of nursing profession, it is necessary for students in this field to have a deep understanding of the content of course materials which enables them to cope with the problems in clinical situations. Since today's students will be tomorrow's nurse's, attempts must be made to use teaching methodologies which require active participation of learner in the process of learning which in turn increase the depth of learning. Teaching in small groups is one of the ways to achieve this goal. There are different views about this method. To evaluate these views, different references were examined in the present study.Literature reviews: many researchers studied the role of teaching in small group among whom we can name the following: Levine, kolb, sherif, Asch, Eiser, Latene, Darley, Bond, Titus, lawrans, etc. They studied the role of interaction between the members of different groups, experiential learning, coping with the members of the group, taking over responsibilities in each group etc.Discussion: The findings of different studies on teaching in small groups indicated that its advantages are more than its disadvantages. Furthermore, with some preplanning activities and monitoring of the group performance, its disadvantages can be reduced. Using this method together with the current methods can lead to influential changes in nursing education help us solve the existing problems and bring about satisfaction in instructors and learners.
