Abstract

Background & Aims: Family Caregivers of patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) experience high levels of Anxiety which result in physical and psychological problems in the Family. This study was carried out with the aim to examine the effect of Educational support on Anxiety in Family Caregivers of patients undergoing CABG. Materials & Method: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Shahid Rajaie Cardiovascular, Medical & Research Center on 80 Family Caregivers of patients undergoing CABG who were selected by sequential sampling in 2017. Patients were assigned randomly in groups. The intervention group, beside routine trainings, received Educational support at the time of entering the study, before surgery, the second day after surgery and before discharging from hospital, and up to 6 weeks after discharging, they were followed up by phone and mobile-based social networks. Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory was used to collect data before surgery and 6 weeks after discharge. Results: At baseline, the two groups were not significantly different in terms of average Anxiety. Family Caregivers’ average Anxiety in the intervention and control groups after 6 weeks of Educational support was 41. 02 ± 4. 33 and 55. 95 ± 6. 10 respectively. The results showed that the study subjects were significantly different in terms of Anxiety scores after 6 weeks of supportive Education (P < 001. 0). Conclusion: After conducting Educational support, Anxiety decreased in Family Caregivers in the intervention group, so it is suggested to use the intervention as an effective strategy in support of Family Caregivers by health care providers.
