Abstract

Introduction: Pain is one of the most common problems in patients undergoing joint replacement. Except for medicinal treatments for Pain relief, non-pharmacological methods of Pain control, such as Benson's relaxation, cause more compromise with Pain and reduce Pain, fear and anxiety, and can tolerate it for the patient. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Benson Relaxation method on postoperative Pain in knee replacement in Elderly patients. Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 56 knee replacement patients referring to Milad and Shahid Beheshti Hospitals of Kashan in 2017 randomly divided into two groups of intervention (Benson Relaxation technique (28 cases) and control (28 patients)), intervention group received two sessions of Benson Relaxation for 3 days in addition to receiving usual care. For 30 minutes after performing each step, the Pain assessment was performed in both groups the severity of Pain was measured through a visual analog scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics (independent t-test, Wilcoxon and Analysis of covariance) was analyzed by SPSS v. 16 at a significant level less than 0. 05. Results: The results of the study showed that before intervention, the mean score of Pain in the intervention group in all sessions (except for the first time) was lower than the control group. Pain score in the control group (P <0. 001) was significantly higher than the intervention group It was (P <0. 001). The mean of the moderated Pain intensity after the removal of the effect of the pretest, the type of hospital, age and sex in the intervention group was significantly lower than the control group (P <0. 001). Conclusions: The use of Benson's relaxation reduces Pain in patients undergoing complete knee joint replacement. Therefore, the use of this technique as a non-drug method is recommended to reduce Pain intensity in patients undergoing complete replacement of the knee joint.
