Abstract

This study examined the factor structure, reliability and validity of INVENTORY OF MATERNAL ATTACHMENT (IrvfA) in a sample of Iranian STUDENTs in which 402 people were selected by random cluster sampling technique. To determine reliability, internal consistency, construct validity and factor structure of the questionnaire, EXPLORATORY PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS analysis was used. The results of confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the original factor structure did not fit on the sample data. Exploratory factor analysis supported the two-factor solution. Overall, both "trust and communication" and "alienation" could explain 57% variance of the questionnaire. We obtained alpha coefficients for the "alienation", "communication and trust" 0.78 and 0.93 respectively. The results about concurrent validity of IMA showed that there was positive correlation between the SOCIAL COMPETENCE of STUDENTs and a - positive attachment of parents (trust), but between SOCIAL COMPETENCE and negative parental attachment (alienation) was a negative relationship. The results of convergent validity showed that the subscales of IMA were positively correlated with components of Parent and Peer Attachment (P<0.05). In general, IMA was found to be valid and reliable a self-report measure of maternal attachment styles. We suggest that IMA has both clinical and research utility.
