HYOSCINE-N-BUTYLBROMIDE EFFECT ON THE ACCELERATION OF LABOR AND POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE IN PRIMIGRAVIDA WOMEN

Abstract

 Background: HYOSCINE-N-BUTYLBROMIDE is a potent anticholinergic agent with its prominent spasmolytic action on uterus and cervix smooth-muscle in the first stage of labor. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of HYOSCINE-N-BUTYLBROMIDE on the acceleration of labor and rupture of the cervix in primigravida women.Materials and Methods: This double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted at Ali Ibn-e- Abi Talib hospital of Zahedan on primigravida women (n=105). With the initiation of active phase of labor either HYOSCINE-N-BUTYLBROMIDE (40 mg, i.v.) or Saline (2 ml) was administered. Duration of the first, second and third STAGES OF LABOR and the rate of cervix rupture were compared in two groups.Results: A significant difference was seen for the duration of the first stage of labor (181±59.1 versus 208.2±48.5 min) in two groups (P=0.012).There was no significant difference for the duration of the second and third STAGES OF LABOR. Although rate of cervix rupture was lower in the Hyoscine group, no significant difference was observed between the two groups.Conclusion: HYOSCINE-N-BUTYLBROMIDE is effective in accelerating the first stage of labor and has no effect on the rate of cervix rupture and POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE.
