EFFECT OF SUPPRESSIVE THERAPY WITH LEVOTHYROXINE ON BONE MINERAL DENSITY IN PREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Abstract

 Suppressive therapy with levothyroxine utilized for benigin thyroid disease may cause reduction in Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and premature osteoporosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of subclinical hyperthyroidism induced by suppressive thyroxin therapy on BMD of PREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN. We studied 50 women (36.8±7.6 years-old) who was on suppressive doses of thyroxin for one year. Their underlying disease was bening cold thyroid nodules. There were no intervening factors such as smoking, alcohol intake or oral contraceptive pill use in participants. Serum T3, T4, Throid Stimulating Hormon (TSH), calcium, phosphorous and urinary calcium were measured. BMD of patients was detem).ined by Dual. Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) for Ll-L4 spines. neck of the femur and radius bone, approximately one year after initiation of suppressive therapy. Standard values for Iranian people, matched for age, menopausal status and body mass index were used as reference ranges. Results showed that there was no significant difference in BMD between patients and Iranian standard values. We conclude that administration of suppressive doses of levothyroxin for a period of one year is not accompanied by decreased BMD in PREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN.
