The Effect of Motivational-Practical Teaching of Basic Science Courses on Meaningful and Deep Rational Learning of Dentistry Students

Abstract

 Introduction: A meaningful and deep rational learning is one of the most important basic science courses of medicine and Dentistry. The purpose of this study was to introduce the Motivational-Practical Teaching method in order to meaningful learning of Medical mycology course of Dentistry students. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted during three years (2016-2018) to investigate the effect of Motivational-Practical Teaching on Medical mycology course of Dentistry students of Qom University of Medical Sciences. After the implementation of this method, the satisfaction rate of 41 freshman and 53 senior Dentistry students were evaluated. Data were obtained by completing a questionnaire containing questions that were appropriate for the research objectives. Freshman and senior point of views were collected from those who participated in the MotivationalPractical Teaching course. Then, descriptive statistics and independent t-test were used in SPSS-24 software to analyze the data. The significance level was considered as 0. 05. Results: From the viewpoint of both the freshman and seniors, the Medical mycology is an important Practical course. Comparing the answers of senior students who studied Medical mycology with the current method and those who completed the course according to Motivational-Practical method, the overall satisfaction level of senior students was 2. 84 ± 0. 04 with a significant difference higher than the freshman students (2. 64 ± 0. 05) (p-value=0. 002). In addition, the mean scores of each question of present study were significantly increased for seniors (p≤ 0. 05). Conclusion: The Motivational-Practical Teaching leads to deep learning along with the students' satisfaction with the Dentistry mycology course.
