Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical MITOMYCIN-C 0.02% in patients with resistant VERNAL KERATOCONJUNCTIVITIS.Materials and method: This placebo-controled double-masked clinical trial was done in resistant cases of VKC. After ceasing previous medications if any, for one week, symptoms and signs of patients were recorded on the first day of the new treatment. Topical MITOMYCIN-C 0.02% was prepared and used in one eye and placebo in the other eye four times per day for ten days. The changes in symptoms and signs were compared at the end of treatment and one month later.Results: Seventeen patients including 11men and 6 women with a mean age of 15 years were studied. Mean duration of involvement was 4.65 years. There was not any significant difference between the two groups in terms of improvement in symptoms and signs. No patient was excluded because of MITOMYCIN-C side effects.Conclusion: Topical MITOMYCIN-C 0.02% four times per day for ten days is not an effective treatment for severe VKC.
