Abstract

Intranasally administered midazolam and sufentanil were compared with placebo as a premedicant for 150 patients aged 2 to 7 years, undergoing tonsillectomy.Thirty minutes before delivery to the operating room patients were randomly assigned to receive either intranasal midazolam (0.2mg/kg), sufentanil (2µg/kg) or saline normal (placebo). A "blinded" observer evaluated preoperative emotional state, heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.Most patients in group's midazolam and sufentanil could be comfortably separated from their parents. The midazolam and sufentanil groups appeared to be more sedated and more cooperative during induction of anesthesia with a lower preoperative heart rate and blood pressure (P<0.05). Midazolam provided somewhat better sedation and cardiovascular stability than sufentanil.
