Abstract

Introduction: BREAST CANCER is the most common cancer in the women. According to recent studies, its incidence in Iran has been increasing. One of the most widely used treatments for different types of BREAST CANCER is MODIFIED RADICAL MASTECTOMY followed by electron beam RADIOTHERAPY. Determining the exact THICKNESS OF THE ANTERIOR CHEST WALL before RADIOTHERAPY is necessary and CT scan of the chest is the best imaging method for this purpose.Methods: 250 women with BREAST CANCER who underwent MODIFIED RADICAL MASTECTOMY and were candidates for postoperative RADIOTHERAPY and had appropriate cross sections of the chest wall in their CT scams were divided into two groups: group R (patients with right BREAST CANCER) and group L (patients with left BREAST CANCER). By using CT scan, the thickness of the chest wall was measured in 9 points determined by 3 vertical and 3 horizontal lines and then the results were compared with the mean thickness of 25±5mm, mentioned in different textbooks. Results: The mean THICKNESS OF THE ANTERIOR CHEST WALL measured in these patients was 24.49±7.7 (P>0.05), showing no statistical difference.Discussion: In this study, the mean THICKNESS OF THE ANTERIOR CHEST WALL in 52.8% of the patients was not in the mean range of 25±5mm, suggesting that CT scan may play an important role in determining the thickness of the chest wall for planning treatment in RADIOTHERAPY and selecting the most appropriate mode of electron energy.
