Abstract

Introduction: Hypertrophic scars constitute a big problem in surgery. Although a lot of different treatment modalities have been introduced, their results are unsatisfactory. In this study, the effect of silicon gel sheeting on hypertrophic scars was evaluated. Methods: Fifty women with hypertrophic scar due to boiling water in the face or neck were selected and randomly grouped. In the case group (25 patients), the wound was covered with silicon, while dressing was used in controls. Scar improvement, itching and color changes were compared in the two groups. Result: Scar resorbtion was seen in 76% of cases versus 32% of controls (P<0.05). Itching suppressing (68% versus 20%) and color improvement (76% versus 0%) were significantly higher in the case group (P<0.05). Discussion: Silicon gel sheeting can be used for treatment of hypertrophic scars. It has excellent effects and no side-effects.
