Abstract

Introduction. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a complication of ovarian induction by using ART. The best treatment for OHSS is its prevention. Albumin is one mechanism to reduce OHSS manifestation. Our aim is to examine its effects on preventing severe OHSS.Methods. In order to do this intervening study of infertile women visiting Shahid-Beheshti and Isfahan Infertility centers, who were receiving ovarian stimulation drugs, 62 high risk (based on the size and number of follicles) individuals were randomly selected and were divided in two experimental (Albumin receiving) and control (not receiving albumin) groups. Twenty grams of Albumin were administered per day of oocyte retrieval. During the study one member of control group withdrew from the group.Results. The two groups were similar in terms of age, follicular phase, HMG number, the day of HCG injection. However, the period of infertility was longer for the albumin receiving group (8±4.35 VS 5.8±2.71). The average number of follicules, the size of follicules, number of oocyte retrieval, the number of transferred embryos were not significantly different between two groups. The number of hospitalization days and the severity of symptoms were less among the albumin receiving group than the control group. %83.6 of patiants showed OHSS manifestation during the first week. The pregnancy rate of the albumin receiving group was %19.3 (6 cases) and the rate for the control group was %23.3 (7 cases) which was not significantly different from the experimental group.Discussion. Albumin is effective in reducing severity and amount of severe OHSS. But it does not have a significant effect in preventing OHSS.
