Abstract

Background: Although WHO has defined CUT-OFF-POINT for anthropometric measures in adults, these can not be easily applied in most societies. The present study was conducted to define CUT-OFF-POINT of anthropometric measures of WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE, BMI, WHpR, and WHtR to predict CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS in Tehranian adults in 2003.Materials and methods: 10522 adults aged 18-74 years have enrolled for Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Demographic data as well as anthropometric measures were determined. Blood pressure was measured and HYPERTENSION was defined according to the JNC VI criteria. Biochemical parameters were determined and diabetes was considered if FBS³126 mg/dl was noted, meanwhile, hyperlipidemia was defined according to the ATP II criteria. CUT-OFF-POINT of anthropometric measures was determined according to the ROC curve, where sensitivity and specificity were equal.Results: ROC of BMI and WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE for different risk factors was recorded between 0.55-0.94 and 0.56-0.93 for men and 0.41-0.94 and 0.53-0.92 for women, respectively. ROC of WhpR and WHtR were altered within 0.58-0.87 and 0.56-0.94 for men and 0.53-0.91 and 0.53-0.90 for women, respectively. CUT-OFF-POINT of BMI to predict CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS was determined 24-29 for men and 25-31 kg/m2 for women. For WhpR these figures were between 0.86-0.97 and 0.78-0.92. CUT-OFF-POINT of WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE and WHtR to predict CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS were determined 80-93cm and 0.47-0.56 for men and 79-96cm and 0.50-0.63 for women, respectively.Conclusion: CUT-OFF-POINT of anthropometric measures that can be used to predict CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS seem to be higher in comparison to other Asian countries.
