Abstract

Background: IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA is a prevalent problem especially in ADOLESCENT GIRLS, the present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a FAMILY-ORIENTED pattern on the PREVENTION of IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA in ADOLESCENT GIRLS.Materials and methods: It was develop in two stages; first we have designed a qualitative study in order to develop the model. Initial data were gathered through a questionnaire, then coded, categorized and analyzed. The core variable was considered inadequate EMPOWERMENT of family. Then, for the second stage a quasiexperimental study was designed, 72 ADOLESCENT GIRLS who have IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA were randomly selected. Intervention method was problem solving for daughters and education participation for parents. Results: results have revealed that knowledge, attitude, perceived threat, self efficacy, PREVENTION behaviors, self esteem, and EMPOWERMENT were significantly differed before and after intervention (p<0.0001), meanwhile, it was shown that the rate of daily intake of hem, non hem, total iron, and Vitamin C were significantly differed (p<0.05) before and after the intervention. The ferritin level was significantly differed before and after the intervention where it could serve as an index to show iron storage (p<0.0001).Conclusion: Our model could significantly prevent IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA, thus we recommend this model to be employed in a larger group of girls.
