Abstract

This paper deals with the use of qāf ī ye (rhyme) in Persian poetry. The rules governing its use were first drawn up by Arab poets, but some of these rules were later modified by Iranians, who found the Arabic script a useful tool for composing rhyming games and other forms of word-play. But there were also, problems. (Zipoli cites eleven cases where the same rules do not apply equally to both Persian and Arabic rhyme.)Two 7th-century (A.H.) Iranian scholars have tackled the problems of qāfīye and have written manuals to guide poets and versifiers. They are Šams-e Qeys Rāz ī (originally of Rey/Rhages) and kāĵe Nasīr aI-Dīn Tūsī(originally of Tus in Khorasan) who have worked independently of one another but have obtained more or less the same results. Professor Zipoli finds the method proposed by Šams-e Qeys in his AI-Mu 'ĵam f īma ā'yīr ašār' al-'ĵam more practical, and at the same the views expressed by Nasīr aI-Dīn Tusī in his Mi'yār al-'aš'ār more precise. Zipoli believes that Tusī's views have been overshadowed by those of Šams-e Qeys because the former manual is better known among the scholars.
