Abstract

Background and objectives: Antimicrobial drug resistance is increasing among SALMONELLA SPP. and causes significant therapeutic problems in the treatment of diseases caused by this organisms. The aim of current study was to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella strains to ten uncommonly used antibiotics.Material and methods: SALMONELLA SPP. strains have been isolated from several hospitals in Tehran during 2007-2008. The strains were identified by standard biochemical tests and serology.The susceptibility of the isolates to ten antibiotics was determined according to National committee for clinical laboratory standard (NCCLS) guidelines.Results: Among Salmonella strains, 16.2% were resistant to ampicillin, 13.2% to chloramphenicol, 19.1% to co-trimoxazole, 25.7% to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, 50.7% tetracycline, 1.5% amikacin, 67.6% doxycycline, 4.4% ticarcillin, 23.5% piperacillin and 0% to Imlpenem.Conclusion: The results obtained from ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY showed that ampicillin, chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole, amikacin, piperacillin and imipenem were effective against Salmonella in-vitro and can be considered in treatment of Salmonella infections although these antibiotics are not commonly used for these infections nowadays.
