Abstract

Background: To determine the type and frequency of different diseases that are referred to herb shops in semnan province the present study was conducted.Materials and methods: In this prospective study, a collection of information about PHYTOTHERAPY was provided and recorded in questionnaires by observation and interview with all HERBALISTs in Semnan province. Using this information, consumption of medical herbs would be more practical. By this research, information about PHYTOTHERAPY status in herb shops during the year 2001, the type of prescribed herbal medicines for these patients and thirteen specified disease were investigated.Results: According to the results, the most frequent causes for referral to the herb shops were: common cold(10.96%), renal disorders (10.20%), arthropathies (9.14%), hyperglycemia (6.92%), gastric discomforts(6.34%) and hyperlipidemia (5.73%) and the most prescribed herbs were jujube, camel's thorn, cinchona powder in castor oil, seed and distillate of fenugreek, cumin, seed and distillate of dill, respectively.Conclusion: The aforementioned diseases are considered to be frequent in Semnan province. We recommend further studies to determine the epidemiologic profile of these diseases and find out their appropriate therapeutic approach. Meanwhile, studies over use fuk herbs should be appreciated.
