Abstract

Background: Injuries to the laryngeal nerve is a common complication of THYROID and parathyroid surgeries. Detecting the RECURRENT LARYNGEAL NERVE can e achieved by a variety of techniques. Here we present our experience with palpating and observing this nerve during surgery.Materials and methods: For this retrospective study, 410 patients who have been referred during a 10-year period to Shohada-e-Tajrish hospital for THYROID surgery due to goiter were included. Detecting the RECURRENT LARYNGEAL NERVE was achieved by palpation and observation for all cases and then possible complications were noted.Results: For all cases the RECURRENT LARYNGEAL NERVE was palpated and then observed bilaterally, however, for those with an isolated nodule this maneuver was performed unilaterally. Hoarseness was the only reported complication that of course was eliminated within few days following the surgery.Conclusion: Employing a safe technique to detect the laryngeal nerve is necessary. We recommend palpation and observing the nerve as a safe technique.
