Abstract

Background: One of the most vulnerable group of the community is under 6 year's children, who are a vital source in assuring a good future for the country. For assessing the QUALITY of care services for this age group in urban health centers, this study has been done in Urban Health Centers of Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, in 2001, 2002.Materials and methods: This study is a cross sectional research with the aim to determining the QUALITY of 0-6 years children care services provided by the personnel of urban health centers. In this research 49 personnel of 3 different urban health centers were selected through a multiple stage sampling and type of services provided for 490 children were observed and recorded.Results: The QUALITY of services provided, was poor by 40% of staff, 31 % medium range and 29% good. Providing poor services to under two years children was 43 times higher than the poor services provided to the 0-2 years old children (OR=43). 100% of development process and 94.9% of nutrition services are provided in poor level. 77.8% of referral and follow up services and 74.3% or reception were provided in a mid range. 59% of growth assessment services were provided in a good level. There was a positive correlation between demographic characteristics such as, age; maritals status, number of children, course of study, degree of study, employment condition, years of work experience, and experience of children services unit, with the QUALITY of providing services (p<0.05). On the other hand, there was no correlation between demographic characteristics such as; living place and in- service education, with the QUALITY of providing services. Most of the urban centers (57.1%) had a medium level of physical condition and facilities and none of them had a good condition. There was a positive correlation between physical condition and facilities of urban health centers with the QUALITY of providing services by personnel (p<0.001).Conclusion: Regarding to the importance of less than 6 years children's health are results, that showed poor QUALITY of services provided to this age group, we advise to do research for assessing the intervention on QUALITY and quantity of health care for children.
