Title

SURVEYING THE UNION STATUS OF FEMORAL NECK FRACTURE AND ITS RELATED FACTORS IN PATIENTS REFERRING TO AKHTAR HOSPITAL, 1991-96

Abstract

Background: FEMORAL NECK FRACTURES is one of the most common problem in orthopedic surgery, which its treatment and complications impose a lot of expenses on the health system. It also causes a lot of disabilities among patients. Due to special anatomical and physiological nature of femoral neck, its fracture is complicated with cases such as avascular necrosis, NONUNION, collapse and malunion, etc. Proper and on-time decision making and treatment can reduce its complications and expenses. Materials and methods: Between 1991 and 1996, reports of patients admitted in Akhtar hospital due to femoral neck fracture were reviewed and the prevalence of NONUNION has been determined. Then by studying different variables, it has been tried to examine the impact of these variables on NONUNION during femoral neck fracture. Results: Of 162 patients, 90 had met our inclusion criteria. 58 were males and overall mean of age was 58.7±13.5 years. NONUNION was reported in 22(24.4%) patients. Anatomic reduction and employing compression at the site of fracture following the reduction have positively affected the reduction outcomes. Severity of trauma, type of fracture, male gender, and increased physiologic age has all negative impact on Union process. Conclusion: NONUNION rate had its higher expected rate. Further studies to determine its etiologic agents and also establishing suitable approaches to eliminate this complication are highly recommended.
