Abstract

Introduction and aim: Measuring HEIGHT and WEIGHT are among the most useful tools to evaluate growth, nutrition and health of CHILDREN. Since the growth is affected by genetic, racial, geographical and environmental factors, the growth charts differs from one population to another.The propose of this study is to determine the growth standards in CHILDREN of 7-12 in BIRJAND and comparison of it, with NCHS and other studies, in Iran.Methods: 1928 primary school students, including 1010 boys and 918 girls were selected through two-stage sampling (cluster and systematically), and their HEIGHT and WEIGHT were measured. The relevant percentiles of HEIGHT and WEIGHT was established and compared with NCHS percentiles.Result: The HEIGHT and WEIGHT percentiles of 7-12 years old CHILDREN in BIRJAND are significantly lower than NCHS.With increasing age the reduction in the WEIGHT was more than HEIGHT, and became significant. Conclusion: There is a difference between NCHS growth standard and this study. It is recommend that the regional growth standard should be developed by more comprehensive studies so that it could be used for evaluation of health and growth disorders for Iranian CHILDREN.Regarding important role of nutrition in growth of CHILDREN, improvement of nutritional state of CHILDREN through family education specially for mothers, and improvement of economical situation is also advised.
