Abstract

There are many studies about micro leakage and different ways to prevent this problem. In the light of dissolving this problem many materials have been developed, one of these materials is varnish that is used for sealing amalgam restorations.Copal varnish is the oldest material which has been used in this field. Recently a few varnishes have been produced in Iran, for example: kimia, B.O.Iranian dentists are often doubtful in using these varnishes. Because Iranian varnishes are cheaper and more available than copal varnish, we decided to compare the resistance of these varnishes against MICROLEAKAGE beneath amalgam restorations.Summary of these results are:1. There isn't any significant difference between the resistance of the Iranian varnishes and copolite against MICROLEAKAGE but the ranking of the mean MICROLEAKAGE can be listed as below: B.D VARNISH < Kimia Varnish < COPOLITE VARNISH2. Varnishes are effective in reducing the MICROLEAKAGE between amalgam and cavity walls.3. The amount of MICROLEAKAGE in the occlusal wall of the cavities is less than the gingival wall.We can assure that we could use Iranian varnishes to reduce MICROLEAKAGE between amalgam and cavity walls.
