Abstract

Background: NURSEs' burnout is considered as one of the major problems of nursing care which is characterized with an increase in absenteeism and a decrease in energy and efficiency levels results in low quality of nursing care. The objective of this study was to determine burnout syndrome among female NURSEs working in general medicine units in three educational hospitals affiliated with Zanjan Medical University in 2002.Materials & Methods: In this descriptive study, all female NURSEs received a questionnaire including Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Spilberger Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI y-2) and socio-demographic information. In MBI scale, frequency and intensity of burnout dimensions including emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and lack of personal accomplishment by Likert score were ranked as low, moderate and high. Respondents' scores to Spilberger scale were also ranked as low, mild, moderate, and high by Likert score. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression were used for analyzing the data. Results: NURSEs showed low scores on emotional exhaustion [Frequency (f) 55%, Intensity (I) 71.4%], moderate score on depersonalization (F: 50% and I: 47.9%) and high score on lack of personal accomplishment (F: 40.8% and I: 42.8%). Other findings revealed a relatively positive relationship between anxiety with first and second dimensions of burnout and a negative relationship with personal accomplishment (P<0.001). Significant differences were found between job status and frequency of emotional exhaustion (P<0.05). Emotional exhaustion proved to be at a lower level in NURSEs who had been employed officially. Conclusion: The results showed different levels of burnout in studied NURSEs with weak relationship with PERSONAL VARIABLES. This high level of lack of personal accomplishment needs more attention. Experimental studies are recommended in order to find ways to decrease burnout level.
