Abstract

This is a survey-method research which attempts to analyze the impact of the satellite channels usage on gender IDENTITY. The theory of use and gratification and Jenkins's theory of social IDENTITY have been utilized to explain the relationship between the satellite usage and gender IDENTITY. A questionnaire was used in high schools of Tehran's educational district No. 5. A multi-stage cluster sampling method with the sample size of 417 persons was employed. The results show that %85 of the respondents had a satellite receiver at home and used it. The test of hypothesis shows that there is a relationship between the existence of a satellite receiver at home and gender IDENTITY. Those having such reception equipment at home gained a lower grade in gender IDENTITY construct which is indicative of change of behaviors and attitudes towards newly emerging patterns and tendencies. Such a relationship is verified upon investigating the influence of amount of use on gender IDENTITY. The motivation for use, played the most important role in defining the dependent variable when all variables were entered in a path analysis model, whereas variables of family status, extent of satellite use, and type of available medium had the lowest defining role.
