Abstract

Background and objectives: Morbidity and Mortality rate of neonates is an index of development in a society. LBW numbers is a main parameter of neonatal mortality. since the neonatal mortality and specially LBW and premature neonates is the most importantproblem of thisperiod, recognizing the causes and some necessary interventions we can prevent and decrease its economical, social and health negative outcomes. This study certify the Morbidity and mortality prevalence of Premature and LBW neonates in Gonabad city in 1379 and 1380.Material and Methods: This is an analytical and descriptive study being done by the use of current datafrom neonates birth files and their mothers too in the years said above.Generally 3483 neonates were born in this year that 209 of them were LBWand premature. The data were collected by some checklistsproviding differently for neonates and their mothers. The checklistfor neonates conclude anthropometry, pregnancy age, LBW and Prematurity causes, different kinds of complications in neonates, congenital anomalies, death and discharge and their mothers checlists conclude demographic information, high riskpregnancy factors and their history.Findings: The results showed that the premature and LBW neonates birth during these years was 6% in Gonabad city. The median of neonates mortality rate in 1379 and 1380 was 5/7% and the most common complication due to LBW andprematurity were CNS and respiratory complications. There was a meaningful relationship between the neonates mortality and thefirst minute apgar Score.The most common delivery was Cesarean Section (53/2%) and there was a meaningful relationship between the kind of delivery and CNS complicattions in neonates. The most common disease in the mothers was hypertension and diabetes mellitus.CONCLUSION: Considering neonatal period and its mortality and health, economical, social and the role of this period on the infants health, it is necessary to improve pregnancy and delivery cares both in quantitive and qualitive forms, and develop neonates wards where N/CU are not accessable and available.
