Abstract

Diarrhea in children is among the main causes of mortality, malnutrition and mental and physical retardation.The aim of this study is isolation and identification of BACTERIAL AGENTS causing ACUTE DIARRHEA in children under ten years old and also detection of serotypes of the isolates. This study is a descriptive cross-.sectional investigation.During a period of 2 years (From Nov, 1998 to Sep, 2000),544 feces specimens were collected from children under ten years old with ACUTE DIARRHEA. In order to isolate strians, the samples were cultured on selenite F,SS agar and E.M.B agar for isolation of the Salmonella and Shigella species and on CIN agar, PBS for isolation of Yersinia species. The isolates were examined to detection of serotypes polyvalent and monovalant specific antisera Of 544 samples, 134 isolates (24.6%) were identified as pathogen bacteria including EPEC 88 isolates (65.8%), Shigella 26 isolates (19.5%), Salmonella 13 isolates (19.5%) and Yersinia enterocolitica 7 isolates (5.2%). The most frequent serotypes were E.Coli 055 (38.6%) followed by shigella flexneri (26.8%) and, Salmonella para B and typhi 30.8% for each one. Results showed that identification of BACTERIAL AGENTS causing children diarrhea in different geographic regions is necessary and isolation of new species by use of modem techniques is suggested.
