Abstract

Background: A few studies has been carried out regarding the effect of AIR POLLUTION on the sperm quality. All of these studies indicated the remarkable effect of AIR POLLUTION on the men’s fertility abilities. The aim of this study was to investigate AIR POLLUTION effects on sperm quality in the industrial zone of ASALUYEH.Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 152 men that were recruited randomly through pollution (Asaluyeh) and control (Kangan) areas. SEMEN analysis was done for measure sperm quality. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software and p<0.05 was considered significant.Results: There was a significant difference in air pollutant mean between ASALUYEH and Kangan. In ASALUYEH, the mean levels of carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were higher than Kangan. Moreover, the results showed significant differences in men’s SPERM PARAMETERS between two areas. Men living in ASALUYEH had lower sperm concentration (p=0.01), total motility (p=0.03), progressive motility (p=0.03) and vitality (p=0.004) in compare with Kangan.Conclusion: This study showed AIR POLLUTION can be one of the factors contributing to the decrease of sperm quality in ASALUYEH zone.
