THE EFFECT OF PYROXICAM GEL WITH ULTRASOUND ON THE KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

Abstract

 Since pain is the main debilitating cause of KNEE OSTHEOARTHRITIS, application of local analgesics have been the center of attention to avoid their systemic complications especially since ULTRASOUND application can enhance their local absorption. This study was conducted to determine the effect of PYROXICAM gel (which is very common in our country) with ULTRASOUND on pain soothing in patients with KNEE OSTHEOARTHRITIS . This double blind clinical trial was experimentally conducted on 90 affected knees taking inclusion - exclusion criteria into consideration. Patients were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups, receiving "pyroxicam + ULTRASOUND" and "ultrasound gel + ULTRASOUND" respectively, for five successive days. Before and after treatment, Knee Pain Scale, Visual Analog Scale and Investigator Total Assessment were checked. The difference of these three indicators before and after the treatment were statistically analyzed using t-test , paired t-test and Mann Withney test. Findings revealed that all three indicators suggested a decrease in pain, which was significant in "Pyroxicam + ULTRASOUND" group (P>0.000l) . The two groups were homogeneous as for their sex, age and BMI . It was finally concluded that "pyroxicam with ULTRASOUND" is more effective than ULTRASOUND alone, and hence it is recommended for routine physiotherapy.
