Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the situation of teaching reading in Iran and to underline the importance of critical thinking. To this end, the writers first survey the history of teaching reading. Second, they critically examine samples of reading books taught at high schools and universities and the type of exercises they offer. The writers then discuss critical thinking and its relevance and significance for teaching reading. Finally, the writers suggest exercises that can be used in reading books to boost critical thinking.
