Abstract

Rice has long been an important crop for the farmers of the Caspian littoral and a staple diet for the people of the region. He was a poor man who could not afford his daily bowl of rice and had to subsist on bread alone! The author who is an independent scholar from the Province of Gilan has gone through a large of number of linguistic sources, particularly those bearing directly on the local dialects of Gilan and Mazandaran, to glean out all the sayings, idioms and proverbs that revolve around rice and its culture. And the result is a long list of sayings, which are, first transcribed and then translated into standard Persian for the benefit of non-native readers. The author's findings clearly show that indeed rice has had a profound effect on the life and language of the Gilaks and the Mazandaranis.
