Abstract

The article "Tolerance in Persian Literature" is reflection in the thoughts of those people who chose the path of moderation for their entire life. The tolerance showed by rulers as political authorities and the tolerance showed by intellectuals in their criticism of fanatic ruling classes, both reflect a thought that took a path different from that of the dogmatic and imperious path taken by most governments. In this paper, the writer presents a general sketch based on evidence from Persian literature. Clearly, it is not possible to deal with the works of all Persian poets and writers within the limited scop of this paper. Meant to raise the question, the paper begins with verses from the Qur'an, followed by some historical anecdotes and examples from Ferdowsi, Ḡazālī, Neẓāmī, Rūmī, Sa'dī and Ḥāfīẓ, showing how tolerant they were. The reason the above names have been chosen is twofold: they have left an enduring influence on Persian literature, and they were easy to find quotes from. While each of these figures can be the subject of a research on tolerance, the writer has found it more to his taste to select quotes from the past thinkers up to Ḥāfīẓ.
