Abstract

In this line from the introduction of the story of Rostam and Sohrab in The Sahnameh: اگر تندبادی برآید ز کنج به خاک افکند نارسیده ترنج (If a strong wind blows from the corner, will cast the green citrons down to the earth), the word konj has traditionally been understood to mean "corner". Recently, however, other interpretations have been presented. Mahyar NAVVAbI argues that the word is derived from the word kang, (as appearing in combinations such as kang des and behest-e kang), which was a place in Soghdiana. DAbIRSIYAQI believes that the word is a dialectal form of kang, which means the "branch of a tree". The writer of this paper shows that all these interpretations are wrong and suggests that the word is ganj, which means a treasure, as appearing in the combination "treasures of the wind" and other Persian and Pahlavl expressions.
