Abstract

In this highly technical paper, the author introduces the relatively new topic of "discourse markers" and then identifies the Persian word bad (then) just as such a marker especially in the everyday speech of the people of Tehran. Bad has been traditionally regarded by Iranian grammarians as an adverb, an adverb of sequence to be exact, and also as a conjunction. In the examples that the author quotes in his paper, taken from everyday situations, he shows that bad is something more than an adverb. It is, in linguistic parlance, an "additive conjunct" and "belongs to the domain of discourse markers", The author ends his paper with the following conclusion:"In present-day spoken Persian, we can say that bad is used mainly as an active conjunct and is a marker of discourse, even though it still functions also as an adverb showing the sequence of actions or as a conjunction of sequence. Therefore, it may be said that bad belongs to more than one grammatical-lexical category..."
