THE EFFECT OF SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT ON THE SEVERITY OF POSTPARTUM BLUES OF CESAREAN SECTIONED WOMEN

Abstract

 INtroduction: POSTPARTUM BLUES is a common mood disorder in women, and if it's symptoms last more than two weeks, it should be major depression So it's prevention will be important in family health. SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT is a way to reduce POSTPARTUM BLUES. The main aim of present research was to study the effect of SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT between mothers and their newborns on severity of POSTPARTUM BLUES of CESAREAN SECTIONed women.Method and materiasls: In this randomized control trial 79 cesarean-sectioned women were allocated. The first selection hospitals for groups assignment (40 women in case and 39 in control group) was random. The place of two groups changed during five days. Experimental group received SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT, 20-30 minutes daily. POSTPARTUM BLUES was measured with Zung's depression scale on third, fourth and tenth day. Data was analyzed with T-student and Regression analysis.Results: Findings showed that severity of POSTPARTUM BLUES were significantly different in two groups on third (P=0.02) and tenth day (P=0.009) after operation. The regression analysis showed that just SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT and duration of breastfeeding are effective on postpartum blue.Conclusion: It was found that SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT is not only effective in reduction of severity of POSTPARTUM BLUES ,but also increased the maternal attachment; so we recommend that SKIN TO SKIN CONTACT is a healthy and economic way to securing psychological well being in women and their newborns.
