Title

PREVALENCE OF GOITER AND URINARY IODINE RATE AMONG THE SCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN IN ILAM

Abstract

Introduction: The province of Ilam was one of the regions with endemic gaiter in Iran. Following the initiation of the plan to control IODINE DEFICIENCY in 1989, production, distribution and consumption of iodized salt developed in community. This survey was conducted along with national monitoring survey in 2001 to investigate the prevalence of GOITER and URINARY IODINE level in order to evaluate the fight against iodine among the school- aged children in Ilam.children, aged 7-10 years, were selected randomly from all regions of Ilam, The grade of gaiter in 600 boys and 600 girls was determined according to WHO classifications. URINARY IODINE content was estimated using the digestion method in one tenth (1/10) of the school children.Total GOITER rate was 13.1%, 11.6% in girls and 14.7% in boys. Median URINARY IODINE was 15.4µg/dl.Urinary iodine was above 10µg/dl in 80.8% and less than 5µg/dl in 6.8%, no one had URINARY IODINE below 2µg/dl. UIC levels and GOITER prevalence was not statistically different between the boys and the girls, neither between the urban and rural areas. It is concluded that the rate of GOITER in Ilam has decreased significantly since 1996 and URINARY IODINE levels in school children are indicative of adequate iodine intake. Ilam province, therefore, can be considered an "iodine deficiency free" zone.
