The Effectiveness of Attention Training on Attentional Functions and response inhibition in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract

 Introduction Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood and Attention is one of the most important cognitive functions which is impaired in these children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Attention training on Attentional functions in children with ADHD. Materials and Methods This study was semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test for the control group. The statistical population of the study consisted of 9-12-year-old male students with ADHD in the academic year of 2016-17 in Kerman. For this aim, 40 male students with ADHD were selected with purposive sampling by clinical interview and Conner's questionnaire and were assigned randomly into control and experimental group. In this study, the Stroop task, continuous performance test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and divided Attention tests were used. Attention training was presented on the experimental group in 8 sessions of 45 minutes, using a set of Attention-focused games and For data analysis, covariance analysis was used. Results The results indicated that Attention training significantly improved the sustained Attention performance and response inhibition of children with ADHD (p≤ 0. 05), but had no significant effect on the selective Attention function, shifting Attention and divided Attention (p≥ 0. 05). Conclusion Attention promotion training package can be used in schools and therapy centers to improve sustained Attention and response inhibition in children with ADHD.
