Abstract

The TRANSLATION OF RELIGIOUS TEXTS is considered the earliest source in translation studies. One of the most effective texts in PERSIAN TRANSLATION studies is the Islamic religious texts particularly the HOLY QUR'AN. The present study is an attempt to investigate what happens to a Qur'anic sentence that does not have a subject in the process of translation. To this end, all occurrences of a sentence starting with a pro-drop structure "yas'alunekd' - meaning "they ask you" - are contrasted in different PERSIAN TRANSLATIONs of the HOLY QUR'AN. Moreover, the ways a pro-drop Arabic structure is translated into a Persian pro-drop and an English non pro-drop structure are studied by an analysis of 40 Persian and 7 ENGLISH TRANSLATIONs. The investigation revealed that in some cases a translator can reproduce the subject in definite form while the author in source language has no intention in presenting subject in indefinite form.
